In an impulsive moment (why are we not surprised?), I called Birgit O’Connor (nationally renowned watercolor artist) to ask if she’d consider doing a workshop in Trinity County (fully expecting her to laugh politely and decline). I was bowled over when she agreed. We had dinner in Redding in January, where she was doing a workshop, and we hit it off famously. This began a series of phone and email exchanges which resulted in her coming this September to Lewiston to do a workshop, and also in our becoming friends.
In my desire to offer our thriving watercolor community (and me) the opportunity to study with talented watercolorists without having to travel outside the county, I have hosted workshops in Lewiston by Joy Wiltsee and Marge Heilman (our locally famous painters), the wonderful collage artist Pat Causey (from Yreka), and the prize-winning artist Vinita Pappas (from Oregon). But Birgit was another venture. She has exhibited in galleries all over the states (Santa Fe, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco) and in Hong Kong, written many articles in noted art magazines, won prizes galore, juried numerous art shows, and done workshops all over the country (including Cheap Joe’s biggee event in Boone, NC).
